What actually moves the number on your house

Depth is first. A drain sits below the bottom of the floor slab by design, so a full basement means a deeper, wider, more heavily shored trench than a crawl space does, for the same length of pipe.

Access is second, and on Victoria's older lots it is often decisive. If an excavator can work around three sides, the job is machine work. If it cannot — a tight side yard, a neighbouring wall, a mature tree you are not allowed to remove — some of it becomes hand digging, and hand digging is the most expensive way to move soil there is.

Reinstatement is third and is the line homeowners are least prepared for. The trench comes out through whatever is on top of it. Grass grows back. A stamped concrete patio, a paver driveway or a sixty-year-old hedge do not, and putting them back is priced by other trades.

Ask each quote to separate excavation, pipe and stone, discharge connection, and reinstatement. Four numbers, not one.
Ask what happens if the trench finds something unexpected — rock, an unmarked line, a second old pipe — and how that is priced.
Ask what is excluded. The exclusions are where two quotes that look similar stop being comparable.
